AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine could study the need for beds serving patients who need help recovering from significant medical and surgical problems.

Democratic Sen. Ned Claxton says patients too often end up staying in acute-care hospitals that can’t meet their needs for long periods of time.

The Senate unanimously passed the bill and sent it to Democratic Gov. Janet Mills Monday.

The bill sets up a task force to report on the matter to lawmakers by Dec. 1.

The governor has 10 days to sign the bill, veto it or allow it to become law without her signature.
