WEST YORK, Pa. (AP) - West York police say a 71-year-old man beat five of his seven young children with a curtain rod, held at least two of them underwater in a bathtub and locked them all day in a room.

The York Dispatch reports Charles M. Benjamin was arraigned Friday on assault and child endangerment charges. His 25-year-old girlfriend, Janay Fountain, is charged with child endangerment for allegedly allowing the children to be abused. Both are jailed.

Court documents did not contain attorney information for either.

Police describe a “house of horrors” when officers assisted welfare caseworkers to the couple’s home Feb. 6. They found five of seven children were injured. The children ranged in age from 2 to 6. Infant twins were not named in the documents.

Police say the children had been isolated.
