KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee death row inmate has been denied a new trial in a couple’s 2007 killings.

News outlets report 37-year-old Lemaricus Davidson was denied his bid for another trial Thursday by a special judge. Davidson was sentenced to death for his role as ringleader in the carjacking, rape and torture-slaying of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom.

Davidson’s new lawyers, assistant capital defenders William Howell and J. David Watkins, argued his trial attorneys failed him by not asking for a jury from outside Knox County. They say no local jury could’ve been fair hearing the case amid daily front-page headlines, two rallies by white separatists and death threats against the defense.

The jury admitted it had heard of the case, but the judge said that their prior knowledge doesn’t prove prejudice.
