House Minority Whip Steve Scalise said Thursday that Democrats are pushing for gun restrictions to “control every aspect of people’s lives.”

“When you hear liberals in Washington talking about gun control, it’s much less about guns and much more about control,” the Louisiana Republican said during an interview with Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle.”

“They’ve been trying to control every aspect of people’s lives,” he added.

Mr. Scalise was described as “uniquely qualified” to discuss gun violence after he was wounded during a 2017 congressional baseball game practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

He was responding to Democrats praising New Zealand’s ban on the sale of “military-style semi-automatic rifles” after a mass shooting in two mosques left 50 people dead last Friday.

The move by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was touted by Democrats, with Sen. Bernard Sanders calling to “follow New Zealand’s lead” and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeting, “This is what real leadership looks like.”
