RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A 30-year-old Long Island man is being accused of gouging out his grandmother’s eyes and blinding her during a dispute over money.
Prosecutors say Michael Grief was arguing with his grandmother at their Sayville home for allegedly using her debit card to overdraw her account by $1,000.
The grandmother then became fearful and left the house to seek help from a neighbor. Prosecutors say Grief followed her and accosted her outside the neighbor’s house by gouging her eyes with his fingers.
Grief was arraigned Wednesday on assault charges following the Feb. 19 attack. He’s being held on $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond.
A message left with Grief’s lawyer at the Legal Aid Society wasn’t immediately returned. Grief is due back in court March 15.
