SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A Sioux Falls man who was shot by a deputy last week after he allegedly charged at officers with a knife has been charged with eight counts, including six counts of aggravated assault.
George Lee Rinzy Jr. made his first court appearance Friday in connection with the May 21 incident in front of the Minnehaha County Jail.
The Argus Leader reports that the complaint lists four officers as victims. It accuses the 44-year-old Rinzy of putting the officers in “fear of imminent serious bodily harm” by physical menace with a deadly weapon, “knives.”
Court documents say Deputy Craig Olson fired two shots at Rinzy, hitting him at least once, when Rinzy did not comply with orders to drop the knife.
Rinzy’s attorneys reserved a bond argument in court Friday, and his bond remained at $500,000 cash-only.
