President Trump said Thursday he’ll leave it up to Attorney General William P. Barr whether to let special counsel Robert Mueller testify to Congress.

That’s a reversal from just days ago, when the president said the special counsel shouldn’t talk to Congress.

“I’m going to leave that up to the attorney general,” Mr. Trump said at the White House.

House Democrats have asked for Mr. Mueller to appear next week to tell his own experience of investigating the president and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Those plans may have been upended after Mr. Trump asserted executive privilege over the Mueller report this week, making some of the materials protected.

Mr. Trump also said he was “surprised” that the Senate intelligence committee, run by Republicans, issued a subpoena to demand his son, Donald Trump Jr., appear.

“My son is a good person. My son testified for hours and hours. My son was exonerated by Mueller,” the president said.

Mr. Trump spoke to reporters during an event on medical billing.

He said he’s firm in his plans to slap new tariffs on China unless a trade deal can be reached.

Mr. Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote him a “beautiful letter” but said the U.S. will hold out for a good deal.

“I think it’ll be a very strong day frankly,” he said of the negotiations that are again kicking into gear this week. “It was their idea to come back.”

Mr. Trump addressed the rising conflict with Iran, saying, “We have information that you don’t want to know about.”

And he said he was disappointed that tensions with North Korea have soared, with the rogue regime launching a new round of rockets.

“We’re looking at it very seriously right now,” the president said. “Nobody’s happy about it.”
