GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) - The family of an inmate who died after struggling with officers in a North Carolina jail two years ago has filed a civil rights and wrongful death lawsuit in federal court.
WITN in Greenville reports the lawsuit says 54-year-old Graydon Parker III of Goldsboro was sprayed multiple times with pepper spray, stripped naked, and placed in a small cell by himself for nine hours at the Wayne County jail in May 2017. The lawsuit also says Parker was “repeatedly kicked, stomped, and punched” by five officers, and was restrained and shocked with a stun gun.
Parker had been arrested for breaking into a car.
The lawsuit names Sheriff Larry Pierce, nine detention officers and a state trooper as defendants. County attorney Andrew Neal wasn’t immediately available for comment on Thursday.
