MONTEBELLO, Calif. (AP) - Montebello police have shot and killed a man they say was armed with a shotgun.

It happened at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Los Angeles suburb.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Dean tells the Whittier Daily News that police got a report of a man screaming in the street and acting erratically. They went to the location and saw a man walking with a shotgun.

Dean says while the officers were waiting for backup, the man fired at least once toward them. Police fired back, hitting him in the chest.

The 49-year-old man died at a hospital. His name wasn’t immediately released.

No officers were hurt.
