GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - A Montana man has received the Bronze Star award more than 47 years after his U.S. Army service in Vietnam.
The Great Falls Tribune reported Alfred E. Shryer was recognized with the military award at an event hosted at a Great Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Wednesday.
Shryer was unaware he received the award until last year when he found a notation in his records.
Shryer’s daughter contacted the office of U.S. Republican Sen. Steve Daines, which arranged the formal recognition and the ceremony attended by Daines and dozens of others.
The Bronze Star is awarded for “heroic or meritorious” achievement or service while in action.
Shryer’s nomination letter says he saved the U.S. government thousands of dollars through a cost-saving program during his 1971-1972 service in Vietnam.
