BEAVER, W.Va. (AP) - Five inmates of a West Virginia jail have been indicted on murder charges in the death of another inmate.

WOAY-TV reported Wednesday that the five Southern Regional Jail inmates are charged in the February death of 38-year-old Kevin Brent Whittaker.

A criminal complaint says Whittaker was found unresponsive in his cell on the night of Feb. 16. It says that about 1 ½ hours later, Whittaker notified correctional officers that he needed to go to the hospital. It also says he lost consciousness while waiting for emergency medical workers.

The station says the cause of Whittaker’s death still is under investigation. The motive behind the slaying remains unclear. It also is unclear if Anthony Lee Johnson, Thomas Antwan Jones, Eugene Lane, Dallas Lauschin and Galen Stewart have lawyers.
