FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a former Arizona Department of Corrections sergeant has been accused of assaulting an inmate at the state prison in Florence.
Corrections officials say Jose Verdugo was arrested on Tuesday while on the job at the Eyman prison complex.
They say the 38-year-old Verdugo was booked into the Pinal County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault of an inmate.
He has since been released on bond and resigned his job.
Investigators say they’re still looking into what happened and couldn’t release any other details of the Aug. 25 incident.
It was unclear Thursday if Verdugo has a lawyer yet for his case.
