WILSON, N.C. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a North Carolina man to four years in prison for distributing a synthetic marijuana that prosecutors say made more than 100 members of the military sick.

The Wilson Times reports the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Thursday that 52-year-old Akram Abdel-Aziz was also given three years of supervised release. Abdel-Aziz pleaded guilty in December to money laundering by structure and conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

Authorities say Abdel-Aziz distributed a large quantity of the drug between March 2017 and April 2018. It was sold in vape shops in six counties.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says in a news release that the product came to the attention of authorities after dozens of people required medical attention after ingesting the product.
