PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A woman has been sentenced to 3½ to seven years in prison in the shooting death of her boyfriend in her Philadelphia apartment building two years ago.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 39-year-old Jeanette Wakefield was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and possession of an instrument of crime after a nonjury trial in July.

Wakefield apologized Friday, saying she “loved and cared about” 33-year-old Terry Corrigan IV.

Authorities said Corrigan was trying to get back into her apartment in September 2017 when Wakefield opened the door and shot him in the face. Her 9- and 10-year-old children were in the unit at the time.

Defense attorney Timothy Tarpey argued that Wakefield fired out of fear. He said he and his client were “very happy” with the verdict and sentence.
