CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A veteran news executive has been named president and CEO of New Hampshire Public Radio.

NHPR reports that Jim Schachter starts Oct. 15. He comes to New Hampshire from the nation’s largest public radio station, WYNC in New York, where he served for seven years as vice president for news.

Before that, Schachter spent 17 years at The New York Times. He was a senior editor in the business and culture departments and at The New York Times Magazine before rising to the masthead position of associate managing editor.

Schachter also reported and edited for 10 years, primarily on the business beat, at the Los Angeles Times. He also covered labor issues for The Kansas City Star.

He succeeds Betsy Gardella, who retired from NHPR in December.
