GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - A longtime sheriff in South Carolina has died after a brief illness.

The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death Thursday of Sheriff A. Lane Cribb at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was 73.

News outlets report Cribb had been sheriff of Georgetown County since being first elected in 1992. He started his law enforcement career with the South Carolina Alcohol Beverage Control as an investigator in 1973. He worked as a criminal investigator with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office until he returned to Georgetown County to work as an investigator there.



Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
