BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A former postal service employee from Connecticut has pleaded guilty to stealing pieces of mail that contained either gift cards or other items of value.

Federal prosecutors say 33-year-old Careema Lewis stole up to 50 pieces of mail between September 2018 and January 2019 while she worked at the post office in Plymouth.

The Waterbury woman subsequently surrendered approximately 10 gift cards she had stolen from greeting cards, and approximately 17 pieces of stolen mail that she had in her vehicle or her purse.

She pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport to theft of mail by a postal employee.

Lewis faces a maximum of five years in prison at sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled.
