DELANO, Calif. (AP) - California officials say a state prison inmate has been killed by two attackers.

Corrections officials said Monday that 44-year-old Enrique Hernandez was attacked Sunday in a recreational yard at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Bakersfield.

Two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene.

Prison officials identified the attackers as Andrew Guzman and Andre Ortega, both age 35 and serving life sentences.

Guzman is serving a Los Angeles County sentence for aiding a rape and burglary, while Ortega is serving his sentence for a San Joaquin County murder.

Hernandez was also serving a life sentence from Los Angeles County for second-degree murder and discharging a firearm at both an inhabited and an uninhabited dwelling or vehicle.

The prison houses about 3,700 inmates.
