EAST HANOVER, N.J. (AP) - A man accused of fatally shooting his wife in their northern New Jersey home last week will remain jailed pending his murder trial, a judge has ruled.
A lawyer for Alexander Jacobs, 74,, argued during Wednesday’s detention hearing that his client should be released because the March 26 shooting was an accident. The judge, though, cited the severity of the charges and concerns that Jacobs might harm himself.
Jacobs has become confused while in jail and “has no idea what’s going on,” according to his attorney, Vincent Nuzzi. When asked during the hearing if he understood the murder and weapons charges he’s facing, Jacobs told the judge “I was a very bright man, but now I am not myself.”
Jacobs shot Lilia Jacobs, his wife of 28 years, in the head inside their East Hanover home, Morris County authorities have said. Police found her body when they responded to a reported disturbance at the residence.
The shooting remains under investigation.
