CHESNEE, S.C. (AP) - A Kentucky man accused of killing a woman in his home state was arrested in South Carolina after deputies spotted him while checking on an abandoned car, authorities said.
Anthony Daryl Hall, 35, of Hillsboro, Kentucky, was arrested Wednesday night in Chesnee, a community about 15 miles (25 kilometers) north of Spartanburg, news outlets reported.
Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Kevin Bobo said deputies went to check on an abandoned vehicle report when they found Hall nearby and questioned him.
An arrest report said Hall told authorities he didn’t know where he was and that he had killed his girlfriend on March 27 at a home in Menifee County, Kentucky.
Deputies contacted Kentucky State Police who said the woman, Jodi L. Stapleton, 35, of Shelbiana, Kentucky, was reported missing on March 30.
Kentucky State Police said Hall told them where to locate the woman, and she was found dead. According to the arrest warrant, Hall and Stapleton had an on-and-off relationship.
Hall has been charged with first-degree murder and evidence tampering, Kentucky police said.
Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office charged Hall with two counts of car breaking and fugitive from justice. An arrest report said Hall was accused of attempting to steal two cars.
Hall was being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
It’s unclear whether Hall will be extradited to Kentucky. It’s also unclear whether he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
