LOCKWOOD, Nev. (AP) - Storey County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the cause of a death of a Sparks man whose skeletal remains were discovered in a remote canyon east of Reno nearly eight years after he went missing.

A hiker alerted authorities after he came across what appeared to be human remains near the head of Storey County’s Lagomarsino Canyon on April 14.

The Washoe County medical examiner’s office used dental records to identify the victim as Marcus Moreland of Sparks. He was 35 years old when he last was seen in June 2012.

Authorities say he wasn’t reported missing until the following year when his vehicle was recovered in the vicinity of where his remains recently were located south of Lockwood and U.S. Interstate 80.

Friends and family members told investigators say they hadn’t had contact with Moreland for several months before that. They described him as somewhat of a drifter and said they assumed he was staying with someone else.

Anyone who may have had contact with him in 2012 is asked to call the Storey County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 847-0959.
