PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A man shot in the parking lot of a public housing high rise for the aging and disabled in Providence has died, police said, making the victim the city’s fifth homicide in less than two weeks.

Police received a report of two gunshots at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Capt. Roger Aspinall said.

The victim, a 29-year-old man, was conscious when officers arrived and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for emergency surgery, but did not survive, police said.

His name was not made public and no arrests have been announced.

The shooting took place near a Providence Housing Authority building called Parenti Villa, but police do not think the victim was a resident of the building.

There have been 10 homicides in the city this year, but five since Aug. 8.
