MILWAUKEE (AP) - A deputy with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office who is believed to have contracted the coronavirus while on duty has died.
Sheriff David Mahoney said in a statement that Richard “Rick” Treadwell is believed to be Wisconsin’s first law enforcement officer to die from the virus after contracting it while on duty.
The Journal Sentinel reports Treadwell had been with the department since 1995 and worked as a recruiter and instructor. The statement did not provide specifics but said “all evidence” indicates Treadwell contracted the virus while on duty.
His body was escorted from a hospital Saturday to a funeral home by a law enforcement procession.
He leaves behind a wife and three adult children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The latest figures from the state Department of Health Services show there were 453 newly reported cases on Sunday, which brings the state’s total to 70,462. About 11 % of the cases are still active.
Wisconsin’s death toll was 1,081 on Sunday with no new deaths reported.
A total of 1.18 million people have been tested for the coronavirus, including 4,814 reported on Saturday.
The number of people who have ever been hospitalized in the state was 5,558 on Sunday, up 13 from Saturday.
