Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and several other members of the program will not be available for Saturday’s game against Rutgers due to medical reasons, according to a team spokesperson.

Linebackers Chance Campbell and Ruben Hyppolite, as well as defensive back Jakorian Bennett, will also miss the game. Defensive coordinator Jon Hoke and special teams coordinator George Helow won’t be coaching for the Terrapins, either.

Without Tagovailoa under center, Lance LeGendre is expected to start. Tagovailoa has impressed in places — and shown his inexperience in others — throughout his first season as a starter. The quarterback, who transferred from Alabama this offseason, threw three interceptions each in losses to Northwestern and Indiana.

In Maryland’s other two matchups — wins against Minnesota and Penn State — Tagovailoa showed the potential often expected of him. He threw for 394 yards and three touchdowns while adding 59 yards and another two scores in the one-point win against the Golden Gophers. The next week, in a win against the Nittany Lions, he tossed another three touchdowns.

Campbell has been the most standout member of the defense this season. He leads the squad with 43 tackles and has one fumble recovery. He also leads the unit with 5.5 tackles for loss. Hyppolite has accumulated 18 tackles through four games, and Bennett has two pass breakups in the secondary.

The Terrapins have missed three games this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, when 30 members of the program tested positive within a two-week window, games against Ohio State and Michigan State were nixed. Last week, an outbreak among the Michigan program prompted that game to be canceled, too.

Saturday is Maryland’s regular-season finale. Coach Mike Locksley’s team will play a plus-one game against a member of the Big Ten’s west division next week to finish the campaign.
