Alex Smith is questionable to return to Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers as he deals with a right leg injury, the team announced. The Washington Football Team opened the second half with Dwayne Haskins Jr. at quarterback instead.

Smith had received a wrap over his lower right leg late in the second quarter, and the Fox broadcast said Smith was dealing with right calf tightness. He’ll return to the game if his calf loosens, according to the broadcast.

Smith had departed the field with 28 seconds remaining before halftime. Haskins knelt the ball once to get Washington into the locker room.

Haskins started the first four games of the season before coach Ron Rivera opted to bring in Kyle Allen as the starter. Once Allen suffered a season-ending ankle injury, Smith became the starter again, completing a two-year comeback from a broken leg that required a multitude of surgeries. Sunday’s injury is on that surgically repaired leg.

Before exiting, Smith went 8-for-19 with 57 yards and an interception.
