CANTON, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia man is jailed after officials said he tried to grab the arm of a sheriff’s deputy as he sped off from a traffic stop.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy had pulled a man over in Canton on Saturday afternoon when the deputy asked the man to get out of his car. Instead, the man grabbed the deputy’s arm and started driving away. The deputy got unhooked after about 30 feet (9 meters) and wasn’t injured.
Deputies pursued the driver north into Pickens County, with deputies from Pickens County and state troopers assisting.
The driver got away, although officers found his abandoned car. Later, officials got a tip and arrested 43-year-old Elmer Pence in Fairmount. Pence is charged with aggravated assault on an officer, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, reckless driving, obstruction, giving false information, driving with an expired license tag and driving with a suspended license.
Pence is jailed in Cherokee County with no bail set. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer representing him.
