GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina county has sworn in its new sheriff.
Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver took the oath of office Thursday after winning a special election to fill the term of Sheriff A. Lane Cribb.
Cribb died in September, and Weaver was appointed interim sheriff. He had been Cribb’s assistant sheriff for 18 years.
Weaver noted he was taking the oath of office in the same church where he eulogized Cribb, according to a news release from the sheriffs office.
Cribb’s “passing was sudden and unexpected, which affected us all,” Weaver said. “Five months later, we are stronger and more dedicated to our mission of serving Georgetown County than ever before.”
Weaver promised to make child safety, handling mental health issues compassionately and fighting drug addiction his main goals as sheriff.
