D.C. United midfielder Paul Arriola will miss several months with an ACL injury suffered in the team’s preseason game Saturday.

Arriola, 25, confirmed it was an ACL injury, first reported by the Washington Post and others, in a message on social media Monday night.

“A few days back on February 15th, as many know, I suffered an ACL injury to my right knee that will take months to recover from,” Arriola tweeted. “As of now it is still unclear on a timeline of events as we consult with doctors and physicians to figure out what the next best step is for myself, my career, and my knee. I want to thank everyone for their kind messages and prayers. I love you guys and I know 100% that I will be back stronger than ever.”

D.C. United has not provided further comment, but the club’s Twitter account did retweet Arriola.

The Washington Post reported Arriola suffered a partial ACL tear.

Arriola, who’s played for D.C. since 2017, scored six goals last year and seven in 2018. The California native has also earned 33 caps with the U.S. men’s national team and in 2019 scored three goals in international competition.

United kicks off its regular season on Feb. 29 with a home game against the Colorado Rapids.
