BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana man accused of lying to police after a fatal shooting at his wedding after-party has been arrested two years after the death.
Christopher Jerome Sterling was charged Tuesday with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact to second-degree murder, news outlets reported. He bonded out Wednesday morning.
Byron Jenkins, 36, was pronounced dead outside the party at “Sterling and Sterling Detail Shop” in Baton Rouge after Sterling’s wedding in January 2018. A 23-year-old woman was also injured.
Sterling, a part owner of the shop, told police he was the groom and Jenkins was his best man, but he didn’t witness the shooting, according to the arrest warrant obtained by news outlets.
Police said Sterling also told officers surveillance cameras at the shop weren’t working at the time of the shooting.
Anonymous tips to police later revealed the cameras were working and Sterling allegedly removed the digital video recorder box attached to the surveillance system before officers arrived at the scene.
Police also learned another friend of Sterling’s was the shooter, the arrest warrant said. That person hasn’t been arrested, news outlets reported.
It’s unclear whether Sterling had an attorney who could comment.
