ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A federal building in western New York was evacuated and a man was taken into custody Thursday while police investigated a suspicious package found inside a vehicle parked in front of the building.
Police later said no dangerous device was found.
Rochester Police Deputy Chief Mark Mura said the man was acting erratically at the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building about 1 p.m. when he was detained “for investigative purposes.” He was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
The Democrat & Chronicle of Rochester reported police then searched the man’s van and found a suspicious package inside.
Roads were closed while police bomb squads arrived to inspect the vehicle’s contents.
The scene was cleared shortly before 5 p.m.
The building houses federal courts and offices for some members of Congress and government agencies.
