COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - An off-duty police officer waiting at a fast food drive through Thursday shot and killed a man after he broke into his vehicle and threatened him with a weapon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.
The shooting involving the Colorado Springs officer happened just after 3:30 a.m. at a Carl’s Jr. According to Colorado Springs police, the officer was sitting in his own vehicle when the suspect approached the officer and claimed he had a gun.
“An off-duty officer was getting food. They just got off shift, and then a male approached them and said he had a handgun,” CSPD spokesperson Sgt. Jason Newton told KKTV-TV.
The sheriff’s office, which investigates shootings involving Colorado Springs police, later provided the details about what led up to the shooting in a statement. The officer fired at least one round at the suspect, who died at the scene, it said.
Colorado Springs police are investigating whether a person involved in an armed robbery at a nearby gas station before the shooting was the man who was killed at the drive through.
The shooting is the second involving a Colorado Springs officer this year.
