STERLING, Va. (AP) - A Virginia State Police officer shot and seriously wounded a suspect who led authorities on a chase Thursday night, an agency spokeswoman told news outlets.

The male suspect was flown to a hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, wounds, the State Police said. No officers were injured.

The officer had tried to pull over a car on Interstate 66 near Sterling at about 7:30 p.m., but the man refused to stop, according to authorities. The suspect later crashed his vehicle and an officer engaged with the driver before firing at least one shot, the police spokeswoman told news outlets.

The agency’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is reviewing the shooting. The suspect and officer weren’t immediately identified.
