LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - Authorities said Saturday that an Oklahoma state prison inmate died after being found stabbed inside the Lawton Correctional Facility.
The state Department of Corrections said Brian Piper, 31, was pronounced dead at a hospital Friday night after being found with multiple stab wounds earlier in the day.
Department spokesman Matt Elliott said visitation at the prison is canceled for the weekend, but no suspect has been identified.
There is no indication that the stabbing is related to violence at six state prisons in September.
Prison officials have said race-based gang tension led to the coordinated violence among inmates at various prisons starting Sept. 14 led to the lockdown of all state prisons that were lifted gradually until all were removed in late October.
One inmate died and dozens were injured in the violence.
Piper was serving sentences for drug and weapons convictions in Pontotoc County.
