NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man is accused of setting fire to the apartment complex that served him with an eviction notice a day earlier.

Forrest Lavery West, 46, was arrested New Year’s Day on an arson charge, news outlets report. Authorities were called to the North Charleston complex early that morning for a report of a fire, according to an affidavit.

Witnesses told authorities that West was screaming about burning down the building and getting the owner some insurance money, the affidavit says. Witnesses said West set fire to a dresser outside the building before lighting a pillow on fire and throwing it into an apartment.

West told a judge at a bond hearing on Wednesday that the fire was an accident and he had dropped his lighter. His bond was set at $15,000. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.

The fire displaced 16 people, including three children. No injuries were reported.
