JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - One person was killed and a second person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a fire at an apartment complex in North Carolina, a sheriff’s office said.

The fire erupted around 1 a.m. on Friday at an apartment complex just outside Jacksonville on U.S. 258/NC 24, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release posted to its Facebook page.

Authorities haven’t released the victim’s identity pending notification of family members. The sheriff’s office also said another victim was taken to the Naval Medical Center.



Twelve apartments were damaged or destroyed, according to the sheriff’s. office. Deputies said four of the apartments were vacant.
