KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Investigators are still trying to determine what prompted a man to steal a gun from a suburban Kansas City store and drive to an Independence car dealership, where he shot a salesman. The man, Jeffrey Millsap, 26, was shot to death by a Clay County deputy after a police chase that ended near Holt.

A gun found near Millsap’s body was the same weapon stolen from Academy Sports and Outdoors in Liberty on Thursday, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe.

Liberty police said when store employees refused to sell Millsap a handgun, he jumped across the counter and stole it, causing brief panic at the store. No one was injured.

About a half-hour later, Millsap shot a man inside a used car dealership in Independence. On Thursday, the victim was reported to be in serious condition.

Millsap then drove to Holt, where he led officers on a chase before being shot and killed by law enforcement near his home.

Clay County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Jon Bazzano said a deputy shot and killed Millsap. It remained unclear Friday whether Millsap fired at officers, KSHB-TV reported.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
