WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - WGBH News said Tuesday it’s opening a bureau in Worcester as part of its efforts to expand coverage of the city and central Massachusetts.

The public broadcaster said the new office will be located in a downtown building that formerly housed the Telegram & Gazette newspaper. It is scheduled to open this spring.

“Worcester has a significant impact on the economy and culture of the Commonwealth, and we are thrilled to increase our on-the-ground presence there,” said Jon Abbott, president and CEO of WGBH. The expansion will boost the station’s footprint and reflects its commitment “to sharing the important stories vital to the lives of our citizens,” he said.

WGBH News said it plans to collaborate with colleges in the area to develop internship opportunities with the new bureau and will use it as a convening space for local organizations.
