FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Two people died in a highway accident involving seven vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said.

A semitrailer truck struck a car around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, triggering the larger accident, The Fresno Bee reports.

Traffic on northbound Interstate Highway 5 in Merced County stopped near the John Erreca Rest Area, 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of Fresno, the highway patrol said.

The large truck failed to stop and struck a car with two people inside, killing both of them.

The names of the deceased were not immediately reported.

The car rolled into another vehicle and the impact pushed the cars into other vehicles.

One driver was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, police said.
