Three evangelical churches in Northern California are suing the state for banning singing only in houses of worship and not protests, TV studios or casinos.

River of Life Church, Calvary Chapel of Ukiah and Calvary Chapel Fort Bragg filed a request Wednesday in federal court in Redding for a temporary restraining order on a statewide worship ban and county ordinances prohibiting singing and chanting amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Worship Ban is not ‘narrowly tailored’ to further any compelling government interest,” wrote the churches’ attorneys, who include Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice.

The lawsuit argues that bans on worship services violate the churches’ First Amendment rights.
