One man is dead and another was hospitalized in critical condition following a shootout at a Wichita motel during what police suspect was a fight over drugs.

Four people were arrested hours after the shooting just before 1 a.m. Thursday at the Scotsman Hotel, police said in a news release. Officers called to the motel found William Pottorff, 40, of Wichita, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three of the suspects are from Wichita and the fourth is from Illinois, police said.

Shortly after the shooting, a 23-year-old man arrived at a local hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds. He remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

Police said an initial investigation showed the shooting occurred after the 23-year-old and several others forced their way into the motel room, and Pottorff and the younger man began fighting. Both men pulled out guns and fired at each other, police said.

“This was not a random incident, and illegal narcotics are a factor,” police said in the news release.
