Man convicted of raping woman and fleeing in her stolen car

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A jury has convicted a man accused of raping a woman in Delaware before fleeing to New York City in her car.

The jury returned a guilty verdict earlier this month against Leonard Lambey, who was charged with sexually assaulting a 33-year-old woman in a random attack at an apartment complex in Ogletown in 2018.

Lambey was charged with first-degree rape and other crimes but the jury convicted him on the lesser charge of second-degree rape. He was also found guilty of first-degree kidnapping, robbery, burglary, vehicle theft, theft and criminal mischief.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 12.

Authorities say the woman had returned home from work when Lambey forced his way into the apartment with a weapon. Investigators have said he sexually assaulted the woman and stole her car keys on the way out.

Authorities in Delaware were able to track the stolen car to Brooklyn, New York. Officers from the New York City Police Department set up surveillance on the vehicle and arrested Lambey when he showed up.
