BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - A 12-year-old boy was shot in the head Monday by his older brother, after a gun discharged while the pair were playing with it, authorities in Alabama said.

The boy was hospitalized and is in critical condition, Bessemer police told news outlets.

Lt. Christian Clemons said the shooting happened Monday afternoon. Clemons said the boy and his 16-year-old brother were playing with the gun when it discharged in the teen’s hand, shooting the boy in the head.

The 16-year-old was taken into custody. No charges have been filed, police said. It’s unclear who owns the gun.

The investigation is ongoing.
