VERNON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant is on track to complete its decommissioning project with the available funding.

Vermont Yankee closed in 2014 after operating for 42 years and is being decommissioned by a New York-based demolition company, NorthStar. NorthStar is working with state officials to locate and clean up any contamination as part of the overall decommissioning of the nuclear plant.

A consultant hired by the state told the Vermont Nuclear Decommissioning Citizen Advisory Panel that NorthStar is expected to complete the project with the available funds, the Brattleboro Reformer reported Friday.

The decommissioning trust fund is currently at about $425 million. It contained a high of about $700 million when Yankee first shut down five years ago.
