The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team will take on Villanova on Dec. 19 at Madison Square Garden, the programs announced Thursday, in a matchup of the 2018 and 2019 NCAA champions.

It will be the ninth meeting between the ACC and Big East powers and the first since 2017, when the Wildcats beat Virginia on a Donte DiVincenzo buzzer-beater. Virginia is 5-3 all-time in the series.

“We are excited to announce this nonconference game against Villanova at Madison Square Garden,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said in a statement. “We have great respect for coach Jay Wright and his program, and look forward to playing the Wildcats in a terrific environment.”

Both programs had strong seasons in 2019-20 before March Madness was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving the season without a national champion. Virginia struggled early but finished its season on an 8-game winning streak, with upsets of Duke and Louisville along the way.

Virginia ranked No. 16 at the end of the season, while Villanova finished No. 10 and a share of the Big East regular-season title.
