PROVO, Utah (AP) - The home of Utah Gov.-elect Spencer Cox became the site of a demonstration over the weekend where several residents gathered to protest against how the coronavirus has been handled in the past few weeks.
About 60 demonstrators went to Cox’s home in Sanpete County on Sunday afternoon to protest against Republicans Gov. Gary Herbert and the governor-elect, The Daily Herald reported.
The protest comes as Herbert implemented a statewide mask mandate last week to limit the spread of COVID-19. Demonstrators also gathered at Herbert’s home in Orem multiple times in the past week.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some - especially older adults and people with existing health problems - it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
Law enforcement officers were present in the driveway of Cox’s home, authorities said. Some protesters said police were “on the wrong side of liberty.”
The group started the demonstration in prayer before Steven R. King of Sanpete County proceeded to read through a megaphone many of the slogans seen on signs being waved, including “Governor you work for us” and “Mask mandates are part of Satan’s plan.”
The group then sang a number of patriotic songs, such as the National Anthem. The protest was peaceful. It is unclear how long the protest lasted.
