ATLANTA (AP) - A former police officer and Gangster Disciples member was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for racketeering conspiracy involving murder, federal prosecutors in Atlanta announced Monday.
28-year-old Vancito Gumbs of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was recorded by federal agents on phone calls passing leaders of the gang information from law enforcement, while he was employed as a DeKalb County Police Officer. Prosecutors say Gumbs also provided a gun to a fellow gang member.
Gumbs was convicted in May 2019 after a jury trial.
U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak said in a news release Monday that Gumbs’ “disregard for his sworn duty as a police officer, betrayal of the public’s trust, and disregard for human life warrants the significant sentence he received in this case.”
