BOSTON (AP) - A nurse convicted of diluting the pain medication of at least 16 nursing home patients at several facilities has been ordered to start serving her five-year prison sentence for violating the terms of a stay of her sentence.
Brianna Duffy, 32, of Haverhill, was supposed to start serving a five-year federal prison term in January, but was granted the delay so she could complete a treatment program.
A federal judge, saying it appears Duffy is having difficulty with her ongoing opiate addiction, ruled that she had violated the terms and must start serving the sentence immediately, The Salem News reported.
Her attorney, Tom Gleason, said his client would not oppose the request, saying “it’s in her best interest.”
Duffy pleaded guilty in July 2019 to tampering with a consumer product and of acquiring a controlled substance by fraud or deception. She was sentenced in September.
Prosecutors say Duffy stole morphine from her patients and tested positive for the drug.
