Rakim Jarrett, a former five-star recruit from St. John’s College High School, announced himself to the Big Ten on Saturday. In Maryland football’s 35-19 win over Penn State — just the program’s third against the Nittany Lions in 44 meetings — Jarrett pulled in five catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

That output earned Jarrett Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday.

Early in the first quarter against Penn State, Jarrett reeled in a pass from Taulia Tagovailoa and sprinted his way to the end zone for a 42-yard score. He returned at the end of the quarter, too, pulling in a 62-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Tagovailoa to set the groundwork for the Terrapins’ upset.

Jarrett’s breakout performance made him the first true freshman Maryland wideout since Stefon Diggs in 2012 to have two receiving touchdowns and over 100 receiving yards in a game. And it shows Tagovailoa has a stable of weapons at his disposal to throw to, including Dontay Demus and Jeshaun Jones.

Those offensive weapons — as well as running back Jake Funk — helped the Terrapins win in back-to-back weeks against conference foes. With a 2-1 record, coach Mike Locksley’s squad will face an undefeated Ohio State on Saturday.
