LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles County sheriff’s custody assistant pleaded not guilty Thursday to sexually assaulting a woman in a jail cell last year.
Daniel Everts, 25, entered pleas to three felonies: forcible oral copulation, oral copulation by threat of arrest or to deport under color of authority and sexual activity with an adult confined in a detention facility. He could face up to eight years in state prison if convicted, according to a statement from the county district attorney’s office.
Prosecutors allege that in June 2019, Everts was working as a custody assistant at the sheriff’s station in Lancaster when he assaulted the woman.
A federal lawsuit filed by the woman against the county and the Sheriff’s Department alleges that she had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence when Everts forced her into a sexual act by warning that she could remain in custody if she didn’t comply.
