AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - It might not be the happiest of Halloweens for deer and moose in the Pine Tree State, because Saturday is “Maine Resident Only Day” for hunters.
The day kicks off the firearms season for deer, which begins in full on Nov. 2. That’s also the day of the longest stretch of the moose hunt.
The deer hunt is taking place all over the state, while the moose hunt is limited to a smaller area of central and southwestern Maine.
The state has promoted hunting this year because it’s an outdoor activity that encourages social distancing. Maine also approved a record number of deer permits this year. The state also increased the number of moose permits in 2020.
